The Annual STOL Competition

Take off in 50 feet, land in 100. Skill to be sure (along with a nice headwind if available) but it takes no small amount of courage too. Many of these pilots daily face an ever changing “runway”. Frequently, a brand new experience if they land around a creek uphill after avoiding rocks and trees. Every year they compete  in Valdez, Alaska.

These guys are the best of the best; they not only practice STOL but they live it. To fly anywhere in Alaska, you have to have impeccable STOL technique,” Lane said. “It’s a whole level of proficiency that I have not seen anywhere in the lower 48.
